Tanglewood Music Studios provides private music lessons for children, teens, and adults, with a growing focus on adaptive music instruction for autistic students and diverse learners. Lessons are flexible, student-centred, and designed to make music accessible, enjoyable, and meaningful.
Students can study voice, guitar, ukulele, bass, piano/keyboard, drum set, percussion, songwriting, composition, digital music production, music theory, and RCM exam preparation. Lessons are available for beginner, intermediate, and advanced students, depending on the student’s goals, interests, and learning style.
About Ty Hall
Ty Hall is a musician, songwriter, educator, and PhD graduate in Cultural Mediations based in Ottawa. He has been active in the Ottawa music community for more than twenty years as a performer, recording artist, music instructor, and academic.
As a teacher, Ty works with students of different ages, abilities, and experience levels. His teaching includes voice, guitar, ukulele, bass, piano/keyboard, percussion, songwriting, digital recording, ear training, music theory, and RCM exam preparation. He has experience teaching children, teens, and adults, including autistic students and students with neurodevelopmental differences.
Ty’s teaching is grounded in the belief that music should be accessible. Some students arrive with clear musical goals, while others need help discovering what music can look like for them. In every case, lessons begin with the student’s interests, strengths, pace, and capacity.
Background and Experience
Ty holds a Bachelor of Music, a Master’s degree in Music and Culture, and a PhD in Cultural Mediations from Carleton University. Alongside his private teaching, he spent several years working as a teaching assistant in Carleton University’s Music department, supporting students in academic and practical music courses.
His academic and teaching background has included work with musicians, educators, and scholars across performance, musicology, improvisation, popular music, community music, and cultural studies. This background informs his flexible approach to music education, where technical learning, creativity, listening, and personal expression are all treated as important parts of musical development.
Performance and Community Music Background
Ty has released several independent albums and has performed across Canada and the United States. His music has brought him to stages including Ottawa Bluesfest, Canadian Music Week in Toronto, and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. His debut album, Dollars and Nonsense, reached the Top 10 on American college radio charts in 2009, and he was a finalist in Live 88.5 FM’s Big Money Shot, receiving development funding for his music.
Since 2014, Ty has also been involved in community-based music programming, including student recitals, concert series, and recreational music-making programs in collaboration with recreational therapists at Royal Ottawa Place. These experiences continue to shape his understanding of music as both a skill and a meaningful form of connection.
Parent Confidence and Safety
Ty has experience working with children, teens, adults, and students with diverse learning needs. He has completed a vulnerable sector check and holds First Aid and CPR certification through the Canadian Red Cross. These credentials can be discussed or provided where appropriate.
